For future climate predictions, there is thus an increasing demand for suitable vegetation models. Models using ecological theory (optimization or evolutionary game theory) are particularly suitable candidates as they avoid the heavy reliance on parameters which has hampered the use of complex simulation models.

In this project you will use a combination of vegetation models based on ecological theory coupled to a hierarchy of climate (atmosphere) models to study these vegetation-climate feedbacks. This project entails a collaboration with the Institute of Marine and Atmospheric Research (IMAU) and the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development.

Qualifications

You will work on developing vegetation models based on ecological theory and test these against experiments and field data. In collaboration with the IMAU PhD, you will integrate these models into a vegetation-climate feedback model. This work will contribute to more realistic climate prediction models of the Dutch Meteorological Agency (KNMI).

You will hold a MSc or equivalent in Biology, Biogeography or a related natural science. You will preferably have experience in vegetation modelling and will have an affinity for ecology, climatology and mathematics.

Terms of employment

You are offered a full-time position for 4 years.

The salary starts at € 2,042.- and increases to € 2,612.- gross per month in the fourth year and is supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and an end-of-year bonus of 8,3% per year. In addition we offer: a pension scheme, a partially paid parental leave, flexible employment conditions. Conditions are based on the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities. The research group will provide the candidate with necessary support on all aspects of the project.

More information about the terms of employment.

Further details

Additional information about the vacancy can be obtained from: dr. The Centre for Employment, Competitiveness and Growth has a sustained track-record in research involving SMEs, and the student will be working alongside other PhD students and researchers within the Centre.

Application deadline: 31st October 2010

Details Scholarship Information and Application Form

PhD positions available in organic chemistry and catalysis at the University of Zurich asian scholarship

PhD positions available in organic chemistry and catalysis at the University of Zurich, Organic Chemistry Institute. This unique residential fellowship will allow scholars and practitioners in sacred music, liturgical and ritual studies, or religion and the arts to join a vibrant interdisciplinary community at Yale University for one year to further and share their work. The fellowship provides a stipend of up to $60,000, and offers the opportunity to teach.

Eligible candidates

The quality, significance, and focus of the work fellows propose to do during the residency are of paramount importance in the selection process. Each fellow will undertake a substantive and original project that relates to the mission of the Institute. This could be original scholarship, an art exhibition, a musical composition, or work of creative writing, etc.

The Institute especially seeks fellows whose accomplishments have already established them in their field, although applications will be accepted from scholars and practitioners at all career levels. For those at academic institutions, tenure is a desired qualification. An applicant should typically hold the terminal degree in her or his field, although exceptions to this rule may be made in some artistic disciplines. The work applicants propose to pursue must support the mission of the Institute; fellows are expected to work primarily on this project during their year in residence.

Clustered Applications

The Institute welcomes applications from a cluster of qualified individuals who wish to work on a common project. Each person must complete a separate application and note in the appropriate place that he or she is part of a cluster. The same guidelines apply in every other way.

Application Process

The application deadline is September 20, 2010. After the selection committee consisting of senior faculty at Yale and sister institutions makes its deliberations, applicants will be notified of their status by February 15, 2011.

Applicants will complete the online form and should include the following information. All materials must be written and submitted in English. The application requires:

Personal data (including education and professional work).

Curriculum-vita, not to exceed 10 pages in length.

A statement of not more than 1400 words describing the proposed scholarly or creative project intended for the year. The body of the proposal should describe the project, explain the significance of the topic, and place the work within the context of relevant disciplines. This project must relate to the mission of the Institute. The proposal should describe in detail the relationship to the mission, and explain how a year’s residence at the Institute would enhance this work. A brief bibliography should be included when appropriate.

A 150-word abstract of the proposal.

A sample of scholarly or artistic work. Scholars should submit no more than 30 pages of published writings. Religious leaders and artists should submit a roughly equivalent example of their creative work (for example, sermons, liturgies, artwork, plays, compositions, etc.).

For those who wish to teach, please include a brief description of one to three courses and the departments or schools in which these courses might be taught as well as a course title, weekly lecture topics, and short reading list. Additional information may be required of fellows after they have been invited to come.
Three letters of reference from qualified leaders in the applicant’s field. Letters should include an evaluation of the applicant’s research proposal and his or her capacity to fulfill it. The online application requires a list of the names, positions, and contact information of recommenders who will be asked to submit their letters online.

If a recommender has no access to email, the applicant should notify us at ismfellows@yale.edu.

Application deadline for receipt of all materials is September 20, 2010.
The online application for the 2011-2012 fellowship year will be available soon.

http://www.yale.edu/ism/fellows/

Scholarship Awards to attend a M.Sc. Degree in Renewable Energy Science

RES the School for Renewable Energy Science in Iceland is now accepting applications for its one year (90 ECTS credits) international M.Sc. Degree Program in Renewable Energy Science, for the academic year 2011-2012.

The RES Program will in February 2011 complete its third year of operation when 49 masters degree students from twelve different countries will graduate. The students this year are specializing in four different fields, namely Geothermal Energy, Hydropower, Fuel Cell Systems & Hydrogen, and Energy Systems & Policies. RES also offers a specialization in Biofuels & Bioenergy. In the near future the school will as well offer specializations in Wind & Wave Power and in Solar Energy in cooperation with foreign partner universities.

RES is a private institution of higher learning, a graduate school, affiliated with the University of Iceland in Reykjavik and the University of Akureyri in North-Iceland. RES is seeking limited number of highly qualified students to enroll in the M.Sc. Degree Program. A number of Scholarship Awards are also available for outstanding students, including e8 Scholarships and RES tuition fee waiver.

We would appreciate if you could kindly discuss our M.Sc. Degree Program details and scholarship opportunities with some of your top students interested in pursuing a degree in renewable energy in Iceland. Currently 81% of primary energy in Iceland comes from renewable energy sources, highest of any nation. Essentially 100% of electricity generation in Iceland is already from renewable energy sources and over 99% of space heating. Therefore Iceland is a good example for other nations to follow on their route to a more sustainable energy future.

RES is also looking to further expand co-operation with leading international universities, as academic and research partners for the M.Sc. Degree Program, but equally so for the RES Summer School, RES Executive School, and as new partners for our RESnet Network (for more information visit: www.res.is ). If your university is interested in establishing such a partnership with us (e.g., initially with a MOU) we would like to hear from you.

For more details about RES and the M.Sc. Degree Program please see my attached letter with this email.

Please feel free to contact the Rectors Office at rector at res.is for further information, or visit our RES homepage at www.res.is

Dr. Bjorn Gunnarsson
Rector
RES the School for Renewable Energy Science
Solborg v/NordurslodI
S600 Akureyri
Iceland
telephone: +354 464 0100
fax: +354 464 0109
mail: bjorn.gunnarsson at res.is web: www.res.isbio: http://www.res.is/graduateschool/page/bjorn-gunnarsson/

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://asianscholarship.blogspot.com/2010/06/scholarship-awards-to-attend-msc-degree.html' title='Scholarship Awards to attend a M.Sc.
