Background:

Ayn Rand’s novels are inspiring and intellectually challenging. But they can also be financially rewarding for high school and college students. The Ayn Rand Institute sponsors annual essay contests that offer 600 prizes and $100,000 in prize money every year.

FIRST PRIZE: $3,000
5 SECOND PRIZES: $1000
5 THIRD PRIZES: $300
25 FINALISTS: $50
80 SEMIFINALISTS: $25

Topics:

One of the following topics
  1. What does Kira mean when she says that the USSR “forbids life to those still living”?
  2. The Communist war hero and much feared secret police agent Andrei Taganov is completely devoted to the Party’s cause. Why then does he lose respect for the Party—and why does he fall in love with Kira?
  3. Collectivism preaches the brotherhood of man. How does We the Living show that it achieves the opposite?
