Chung Yea-kyung, a Korean composer currently based in New York, was recently named recipient of the Vic Mizzy Scholarship from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), her representatives said Tuesday.
The scholarship honors Mizzy, a film and television composer known for his music in ''The Addams Family’’ and many other works, and is aimed at supporting talented students or graduates from New York University’s Film and Multimedia Scoring. Chung is one of the few non-U.S. citizens to receive the award.
Chung, 29, has a wealth of experience as a composer, music director and occasionally a singer in the television and film business. She showed her promise early, winning MBC television’s New Song Contest for her children’s song ''The Word I Love the Most’’ at the age of 12.
Later she worked with internationally noted musicians such as Sumi Jo and I Musici and released an album as a singer-songwriter titled ''Cocktail Tale’’ in 2006.
Chung also composed music for the musical ''Moby Dick’’ in 2011, which earned her Best Music Director award from the Yegreen Award.
She is currently on her way to pursue master’s degree at Scoring for Film & Multimedia of NYU, receiving the Sorel Scholarship for Women in Film Music, and working as a music supervisor for a global social game TreePlanet.
Congratulations Chung!
